Question: What is the symptom of taking too much pancreatin?
Answer: The symptom you will get from taking more pancreatin than your body needs is a warm or hot feeling in your anus when you have a bowel movement (BM). This tells you that you took too much pancreatin and the excess is being excreted in your feces.
This sometimes happens when people are taking large quantities of pancreatin to fight cancer and they take more than is needed.
Question: How can I tell how much pancreatin I need for digestion?
Answer: For digestion, I recommend you start at a relatively small amount of pancreatin capsules and every few days increase the amount. At some point, as you increase the amount, your body will tell you that you took too many.
When this happens, roll the dosage back a couple of days. For instance, if you are taking 20 capsules at a time one half hour before you eat and you notice you’re getting a hot feeling in your anus when having a BM, you might want to reduce the amount you are taking before meals to 16 or 18 capsules.
When your supply of the 325 mg pancreatin capsules is beginning to run out, and if you are taking 16 at a time, you might want to switch to the 1200 mg pancreatin capsules because by taking 1200 mg capsules you won’t have to take as many each time.
Also, your cost will be reduced because the larger size costs less per milligram.
Question: Do Vegans (plant-based, whole food eaters) and Omnivores (animal product eaters) require different amounts of pancreatin?
Answer: The different food choices that you consume will require different amounts of enzymes. A vegan will require less volume of enzymes than someone who is an omnivore because it takes more energy in the form of enzymes to digest animal products whether it is eggs or steak. It takes a lot more because there is no fiber in animal products and there is very little moisture. Therefore, if you eat a 4 oz serving of beans it takes a lot less pancreatin to digest it completely then a 4 oz serving of eggs.
Note: My mentor, Dr. William Donald Kelley, determined that for the digestion of food nine grams of pancreatic enzymes is the clinical dosage to be taken 30 minutes prior to eating and the consumption of larger dosages was an unnecessary expense as the enzymes were not needed above this amount for digestion.
